Purpose of the Programme
The Bachelor of Arts Honours in Islamic Studies is a postgraduate specialisation qualification, characterised by the fact that it prepares students for research-based postgraduate study. This qualification typically follows a bachelor’s degree and serves to consolidate and deepen the student’s expertise in a particular discipline, and to develop research capacity in the methodology and techniques of that discipline. This qualification demands a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence. In some cases, a Bachelor Honours Degree carries recognition by an appropriate professional or statutory body.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the qualification the student will be able to:
- Translate the text of the Quran and have an awareness of the basics of general subjects.
- Understand the true spirit of Islam.
- Address the role Muslims play in understanding and providing solutions to pressing issues in South Africa and the contemporary world.
- Answer the crucial contemporary questions regarding Islam & Islamic civilization.
- Become practical Muslims.
- Resolve the socio-political, economic, and cultural issues in individual and collective life and do quality research.
Admission Requirements
The minimum admission requirement is an appropriate bachelor’s degree or appropriate Advanced Diploma.
Students intending to enroll for the Advanced Arabic or the Translation Theory of Selected Arabic Texts modules must hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of two years of Arabic studies or an intermediate Arabic competency level. Students enrolling in either of these two modules will therefore be required to take an Arabic competency level test.
