The colloquium entitled Islam and the Academic Tradition: Curricular and Pedagogical Opportunities for South African universities took place on the 12th and 13th June 2014 at the University of Free State, Bloemfontein. 

The panel included Shaykh Muhammad bin Yahya al-Ninowy, Shaykh Siraaj Hendricks, Prof Dockrat (Secretary: United Ulama Council of South Africa), Prof M Haron (Religeous Studies: University of Botswana) and Prof Hasina Ebrahim (UFS). The opening was done by the Rector/ Vice Chancellor of UFS, Prof J Jansen, and the colloquim was facilitated by Dr M Sukdaven (UFS) and Mr Asgher Muktar. Dr A M Rafudeen (Religeous studies, UNISA) concluded the program with a critical response, summing up the key discussion points of the colloquium.

A working group has been formed with the aim of developing an Islamic Studies program at UFS by 2016.
